Chopard’s history can be traced back to 1860 when Swiss watchmaker Louis-Ulysse Chopard started a company producing watch movements in Sonvilier, Switzerland. He soon moved into making watches and developed a reputation for quality timepieces which attracted buyers across Europe, including Tsar Nicholas II of Russia. From 1915 onwards Louis-Ulysse’s son, Paul-Louis, and then grandson, Paul Andre, took over, with the business moving to Geneva during this time. In the 1960s Paul Andre sold the company to German watchmaker Karl Scheufele III. The Scheufele family, who still own the business today, expanded into international markets and cemented Chopard as a key player in the luxury watch and jewellery market. The brand is known for its stunning timepieces that can also be considered jewellery with the use of beautiful diamonds, gold and precious stones in its designs, and as such used Chopard watches are extremely popular in the second hand market.
CHOPARD HAPPY DIAMONDS
One of the most luxurious and iconic collections from Chopard is Happy Diamonds. Created in the 1970s, this design features a floating diamond effect for watches that are truly eye-catching. The second collection to emerge was Happy Sport, created by artistic director and co-president Caroline Scheufele in 1993. Designed as a more casual option, the Happy Sport is said to be the first watch to combine a stainless steel case and diamonds, with just a smattering of elegant diamonds between the two sapphire crystals. Since its inception the collection has expanded with options including precious metals, coloured stones, exotic leather straps and of course, plenty of diamonds. The legacy of Chopard would not be complete without mentioning the L.U.C watch. Named after founder Louis-Ulysse Chopard, this collection of stunning watches is known for precision and craftsmanship. In the 1990s Chopard opened a separate production facility and developed its own automatic movement, beginning a journey of innovation for the brand, which has since gone on to produce a range of features such as chronographs and tourbillons for this range. Models of note include the sophisticated L.U.C 1963 chronograph, a 50th anniversary tribute to the Scheufele family which features a hand-wound chronograph calibre, and the iconic L.U.C 1860 watch.
