Greek silversmith Sotirio Bulgari opened his first shop in Rome in 1884 selling a variety of items, including silver and jewels. The shop proved popular with tourists and he was able to open new shops in Rome, one of them being a flagship store at 10 Via Condotti which is still there today. From the 1940s the brand started to make a name for itself in the world of watchmaking, with its style, which was often inspired by Roman history, starting to emerge. The snake symbol, which continues to appear in designs today, was also often an element of the early watches from Bvlgari. In the following decades the luxury Italian brand introduced more colour and precious stones to its designs, becoming favourites for Hollywood royalty which included Elizabeth Taylor.
