Founder and watchmaker Leon Breitling started out crafting watches in his workshop in Saint-Imier in Switzerland. Bringing together the words ‘navigation’ and ‘timer’, this timepiece was unveiled in the 1950s and was designed to be the go-to watch for pilots. Equipped with the same slide rule on the bezel, this piece of engineering allowed the wearer to calculate all the essentials needed for a flight such as airspeed, flight time and distance. Breitling partnered up with the Aircraft Owners & Pilots Association and the Navitimer became the official timepiece of the organisation, remaining a favourite watch of pilots around the world. The design watch developed through the decades with the release of quartz versions, different dial designs, the introduction of in-house movements and limited edition models. As one of the most iconic chronograph watches ever made, the Breitling Navitimer remains extremely sought after in the luxury second hand market today and as such is a clever investment to make when looking to add to your watch collection.

Not content with ruling the skies, Breitling also took its expertise to the seas by answering a growing demand for diving watches. In the late 1950s the company unveiled its SuperOcean chronograph designed to make it easy for divers to read underwater and with the ability to be water resistant up to depths of 200 metres. The SuperOcean continued to evolve and change, incorporating updated aesthetics and innovations, with the newest models featuring a helium valve that means it can cope with water pressures up to 2,000 metres.

Breitling’s desire to innovate continued with one of its more recent models, the Exospace B55. Tapping into our need for connectivity, this chronograph watch connects to a smartphone and notifies the wearer of messages, appointments and phone calls.
